Progress in improving the natural environment in Northern Ireland 2024/2025

The Executive has made significant commitments to protect and improve the environment but efforts must be accelerated if these are to be met, concludes our first progress report on delivery of Northern Ireland’s Environmental Improvement Plan (EIP).

Our assessment finds that commitments in the EIP and the Programme for Government have set a foundation for much needed action, but the current pace and scale of action will not deliver the change that is needed for the plan to be effective.

While some progress has been made, substantial challenges remain and the prospects of achieving EIP ambitions, targets and outcomes are largely off track. However, prospects are not fixed and there are clear opportunities to deliver improvements.

Alongside the report we have also published:

  • A methodological statement
  • A statement of compliance with the UK Code of Practice for Statistics
