OEP response to government's 30by30 on land target delivery plan

Government has today (Monday, 13 July) published a delivery plan for the 30by30 on land target.

OEP Chief Scientist Professor Robbie McDonald said: "In our latest progress report, published in January, we found that government remained largely off track to meet its environmental ambitions and commitments. We said its actions now would determine whether key targets such as 30by30 would be met.

"We therefore welcome that a delivery plan for 30by30 on land is published today and recognise the additional explanation it offers on how government intends to meet its global commitment to ensure 30 per cent of land is protected for nature by 2030.

"There are elements of the plan that are welcome. It recognises the need to accelerate action and identifies a substantial pool of land that either already contributes to, or has the potential to contribute to, the target. It then offers a more coherent approach to making sure land is eligible to be counted.

"However, we remain concerned that the actions government sets out do not amount to change at the scale and pace needed. While this plan contains a range of positive actions and enabling measures, we would like to see more from government to show that the actions do actually stack up to mean the target will be met.

"We would encourage government to strengthen its approach by setting out a clearer and quantified pathway from the current position to the target being met in 2030 and what each element of the plan is expected to contribute. The additional clarity this would bring would also move England towards meeting legally-binding biodiversity targets for 2030 and 2042, which will otherwise likely be missed on the current trajectories."
