This project provided a comprehensive resource on water quality challenges facing England and Northern Ireland by identifying emerging substances of concern, identifying critical knowledge gaps and proposing key recommendations.
Atkins was commissioned by the OEP to produce a comprehensive stocktake of water quality pressures in England and Northern Ireland, focusing on emerging pollutants, priority substances, and gaps in monitoring and regulatory frameworks.
The work forms part of the OEP’s wider review of the water environment.
The study comprised three main components: (1) a literature based stocktake of pollutants, (2) a risk assessment of selected high concern substances, and (3) a review of delivery plans and regulatory measures addressing water quality challenges.
