The report analysed how England and Northern Ireland’s River Basin Management Plans (RBMPs) compare with approaches and performance in EU Member States, Scotland and Wales, and selected non EU jurisdictions.
The purpose of the work was to help the OEP develop an independent view of the challenges facing the water environment and identify lessons that could support improved implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) outcomes. The project consisted of four tasks: comparing England/NI with all EU Member States; comparing England/NI with Scotland and Wales; assessing detailed practices in selected EU countries (Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark); and reviewing lessons from non EU jurisdictions (New Zealand, California, South Africa).
